Every morning, when I wake up and look in the mirror,  I look like I dug myself straight out of a coffin. My skin is dull, lacks vibrance and I’m point blank not happy with it. Maybe that’s just apart of getting old, but I still hate it.

Because of this irritation I wear makeup every single day, but now I’m noticing that I wear makeup even when I don’t really have to. In fact, I feel ugly when I don’t wear it, which is becoming a real problem for me.

Is Wearing Makeup Everyday Harmful?

I know some of you out there can relate. I know I’m not the only one. I’m not to the point where I run to put it on first thing in the morning, but I will put it on to run to the grocery store or to run a slight errand or two. I want to get to a point where I only wear it for special occasions, but am I too late?

Should I even be wearing make up every day?

Since I have no idea on the science behind makeup, I turned to none other than the Esthetician QUEEN Mrs. Mylah Stanton of Noyce B Skin Therapy. I knew she’d have the answers for me…

How does wearing makeup everyday contribute to changes in the appearance of the skin (less color, blotchiness, dryness, etc.)?

Changes in the appearance of the skin can be attributed to many different factors – makeup being one of them. Typically, if a person finds makeup that they are not allergic to and that does not clog pores (is non‐comedogenic), wearing it everyday will have little to no effect on their skin.

As a matter of fact, a good foundation can serve as a protective barrier between your skin and the outside elements.  Changes to the skin of frequent makeup wearers can be caused by allergic reactions. The most popular cause of allergic reactions is fragrance. These allergies can lead to discoloration (pigmentation), small bumps, acne breakouts, redness, dryness, etc.

Listen to your skin. Your skin shouldn’t itch or turn red after you put on your makeup.

Are there disadvantages to wearing makeup everyday? If so, what are they and how can they be avoided?

There really aren’t any disadvantages to wearing makeup everyday. But again, this depends on how sensitive your skin is and if you have any particular allergies to cosmetics. The disadvantages come when you’re not removing your makeup and cleansing and moisturizing your skin everyday. Wearing makeup all day gives your skin plenty of opportunity to absorb it. Take the time to cleanse and moisturize your skin to give it a chance to “recover” while you sleep.

Can you recommend the best at home skin care regimen for daily makeup wearers based on the three common skin types (oily, dry, combination)?

The best at home skin care regimen for any skin type is to cleanse, hydrate, and protect (wash your face, and apply a moisturizer and SPF). Your skin type will determine the types of products your skin needs. For instance, if you have oily or combination skin, you would want to use a cleansing gel versus a cleansing cream/lotion.

Is Wearing Makeup Everyday Harmful?

If you have a dry skin, you’ll want to make sure your moisturizer is more occlusive, meaning heavy enough to help your skin hold in its moisture and prevent dryness. I tell my clients they should always cleanse twice – once to remove makeup, and once to actually cleanse the skin. Also, exfoliating your skin twice a week helps keep your skin vibrant and glowing.

What advice can you give a woman who wears makeup everyday and is unhappy with the appearance of her skin without her makeup?

If you’re reason for wearing makeup is to conceal blemishes and an uneven skin tone, talk to your esthetician about what products you can use to heal those underlying issues.

My goal for my own skin is to get to the point where I can leave the house without makeup because my complexion is even and blemish free. If anything, I’d like to be able to apply a BB cream with SPF and walk out the door.

Some people like to wear makeup just because. And that’s fine. Just make sure your makeup is enhancing your natural beauty and not covering up that gorgeous face that hides beneath it!

Remember, no one has perfect skin. The key is to work to create and maintain “healthy” skin. Healthy skin has a good oil and water balance…not dry, dehydrated, or excessively oily. Investing in taking care of your skin is just as important as brushing and taking care of your teeth. We brush our teeth everyday to maintain a healthy smile and every six months, we go to the dentist for a deep cleaning. The same applies to the face. Every month or so, see a licensed esthetician for a through cleanse, masque, serums, and hydration. It will give your skin the boost it needs.

I guess I just need to hone down on a better skin care regimen, instead of axing makeup all together. I also, need to get myself to space where I can go with a lighter coverage, like a BB cream or a tinted moisturizer instead of my thicker liquid foundation. Most importantly, I need to work on how I view myself without make. I just need to accept who I am and work from there!
