Sacramento Wine Tasting: The Deltas "Southern-ish" Charm

Once upon a time I was the foolish one who thought that if you lived in Norcal had to go Napa Valley to have any fun wine tasting. As progressive as I’d like to think I am, sometimes my mind does tick a little slower than it should. It took the likes of fashion blogger and Sacramento native Katchet, of The Lipstick Giraffe, to pull my head out of the sand and start exploring some of Sacramento’s beauty.

Sooooooo, we took our lil ol’ prissy sippin’ selves down to Sacramento’s Delta in hopes of finding some good local wineries. Nobody has the time or energy to even think about that 80 freeway or driving across the bay. Nope, I’ll pass.

Our first stop was the Old Sugar Mill. Katchet recommended going here, as it hosts a bunch of wineries in one place. It was an experience, but I have to say it was a bit overwhelming [said no experienced wine taster anywhere ever, lol] for me. So many wineries to try and you want to try them all before you go. Thank goodness for uber!

In case you’re not in the know, the Old Sugar Mill is like the Walmart of wineries for Sacramento.  I’d recommend going if you’re planning to go wine tasting with larger groups. It’s a place more for socializing. There’s so many people, it’s hard to really connect with the sales reps to get educated on what you’re tasting and considering purchasing.

However, the grounds are beautiful. They have the most immaculate event space I’ve ever seen. We were twirling around like we were 10 years old, planning our future “imaginary” weddings. A girl can dream though, can’t she?!?!?

We ditched the Old Sugar Mill looking for something more intimate. My favorite brand of red wine are the berry flavors of Bogle’s Zinfindel, so when Kachet told me that the Bogle Vineyard was a short distance away, we hopped on those back roads and headed over. The ride over was beautiful. The plantation styled houses alongside the river and a the nesting grounds for all kinds of wildlife, I was almost sure a crocodile was going to pull itself out of the waters at any given moment.

Just as the $9 bottle of my favorite Bogle wine in the grocery has never failed me, the Bogle Vineyard didn’t either. The staff was informative, the grounds felt like a slice of heaven and the wine was wonderful. I even stepped outside of my wine comfort zone and tried a desert wine, which I ended up purchasing and coincidentally I am sipping on now as I write this….

Don’t sleep on Sacramento’s winery options. Plus, the Sacramento Delta is sure to take you away, often likening the southern charm of the swamps of New Orleans, or as we’d say Naw’lins.

If you’re in Sacramento and trying to find a winery close to you, you know big sis has your back! Check the Sacramento Wine Guide’s winery map to find a winery closest to you. The Old Sugar Mill and the Bogle Winery isn’t on their list, so I’ve listed their information below.

Bogle Vineyeard: 37783 Road 144, Clarksburg, CA 95612 | Old Sugar Mill: 35265 Willow Avenue, Clarksburg CA 95612

Tell me about your last wine tasting experience?!?!?
